Tell us a little about your business. – Quality features, exceptional customer service, free service plans and reliability are just some of the elements that make our stores the destination for customers looking to replace their discount store vacuum. Oreck is famous for powerful, durable and easy to use vacuums that weigh nine pounds or less. We are part of a dealer network of 400 Oreck stores across the country that are dedicated to providing a level of support for our cleaning products that no other brand can equal. We repair all brands of vacuums like Dyson, Hoover and Eureka, provide loaner vacuums free of charge and take trade-ins. We are also Lincoln’s only authorized Miele dealer, a German company that makes the best canister vacuums in the world.

How did you get started in the business? – I started my career in the hardware business as an after school job during high school and college. After 10 years I accepted a position at Johnson Ace Hardware in downtown Benson and in January of 1985 my wife and I purchased the business. My brother Jim was manager of the first licensed Oreck store which opened in Omaha 20 years ago this August. My wife Mary and I marveled at the success of this little store in west Omaha selling this little vacuum cleaner that we had never heard of. Jim and I attended the first Oreck dealer convention in the fall of 1997 and a year later became partners and opened our first store in Sioux City. In 2000 we took over the Lincoln market from an existing dealer and opened a brand new store across from the South Pointe mall. In 2010 we moved across the parking lot to a new larger showroom facing Pine Lake Road.

Tell me a little about your family. – I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 37 years and we have three children and two grandchildren.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I love going to the movies. My wife and I are serious gardeners so we spend a lot of time taking care of a big yard.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I delivered my youngest child Michelle at home on our living room carpet. And no, that was not the plan. I am a firm believer in doctors and hospitals.  My name is on her birth certificate as the attendant.

What are you the most proud of? – My wife, who has always believed in me and my small business aspirations, and my children for the wonderful people they have become.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – David Oreck, who is still going strong at the age of 90. I just read the book he wrote last year, From Dust to Diamonds.  He is the quintessential American success story.
