Tell us a little about your business. – We pride ourselves in the implementation of modern landscaping ideas and functional flare into any landscape.  For this reason, we avoid the ‘cookie cutter’ approach to landscaping and focus on making each job unique while meeting our customer’s needs.

How did you get started in the business? – During college I helped out with the occasional landscape project for my dad’s business, Maack Land Improvement, and grew an appreciation for the beauty, pride and accomplishment of seeing the process through to the final product.  So years later, after working multiple other ‘white collar’ jobs, I saved enough money to return to my roots and started my own business with a truck and a shovel.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Landscaping in Nebraska is a seasonal job except for the occasional snow storm, so maintaining twelve months of income is a challenge.  I appreciate the time off, but would enjoy twelve months of continuous income to help my staff throughout the year.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – People who I don’t know recognizing me for my business through ‘word of mouth’ or advertising.  Being able to grow my business from one man with a truck and a shovel to multiple employees, equipment, vehicles, and knowing that I did this without much help is a personal achievement that means a great deal to me.  I feel a great sense of accomplishment from being successful in taking the skills that I learned in college and life and implementing those in order to operate a successful business.

Tell us a little about your family. – My family all grew up in the Ashland area.  I was raised on a farm near Mahoney State Park and helped my dad farm in addition to working for his business.  I have a four year old loving and energetic son named Beckam, who is really into super heroes.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Definitely becoming a father, followed by taking the risk to start my business and making a career change that ended up being perfect for me.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Hanging with my son is always top priority, otherwise anything outdoors on a beautiful day.  Working on my cars or motorcycles, car shows and sporting events are at the top of my list.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I am self-taught in the art of motorcycle restoration.  I have restored my four motorcycles, two of which won trophies in the local Abate Motorcycle show.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – My dad once told me, “You’re young enough to take chances on yourself and your ideas, even if others don’t support you.”

If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “Cat’s In The Cradle” by Harry Chapin.  This song reminds me to work hard at my career but to never neglect my family, because kids grow up fast.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Mazatlan
