A true entrepreneur, Todd Messing had already started four businesses by the time he met Kris Roath and they decided since they knew everything about technology and Todd knew how to start a business, they should go for it. The result was SirkDot Innovations, a start-up company that provides IT support and web development, specifically for start-ups and small businesses in Lincoln and surrounding areas. The company has clients in Lincoln, Columbus, Seward, Fairbury and Auburn.
Tell us a little about your family. - My Dad lives here in Lincoln and my Mom lives in Columbus where I’m from originally. I have a younger sister who is absolutely brilliant and majoring in Environmental Studies at UNL. I also have a yellow Labrador named Rubee. No significant other for me currently, though maybe this article will win some style points for me!
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – When I was working on my first business, I worked part time at Super Saver in Columbus. I told one of my mentors that I really didn’t feel like my skills were being utilized in my job there—he told me to work out the numbers to see what I needed to make with my business in order to leave my job. So I did…and a few days later I walked into my mentor’s place of business and told him I had put in my two weeks at Super Saver to go full time with my own business. The look on his face was priceless!
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I like to travel or go to a concert. As you can imagine, I don’t get many days off.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – My favorite band is Rammstein, a German rock band. I’ve been to Chicago and San Antonio to see them live.
What are you the most proud of? – I’m pretty proud that I haven’t given up yet. I know a lot of people who have.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – I’ve received a lot of great advice over time. My most recent best was “Never underbid a project.”
What is the one goal you would most like to accomplish? – I would like to re-learn how to play guitar again. I really enjoyed that.
How would your friends describe you? – Ambitious, passionate, maybe a little egotistical…but you have to have a high level of confidence to start a business and sell your product/service to people you don’t know.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – I like to grill. Steak, pork, vegetables, you name it. Don’t really get to do that at SirkDot, sadly.
Which talent would you most like to have? – I wish I could dance!…and not look ridiculous.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? - I have the worst time waking up in the morning…if I could fix that, that’d be awesome.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
What is your favorite movie? – Depending on what genre…Wrongfully Accused with Leslie Nelson
What is your favorite TV show? - All-time favorite – Eureka!
What is your favorite Lincoln restaurant? - If you know me and I’m not in my office…I’m at Granite City!
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Frank Sinatra
