McGill Restoration Inc. (www.mcgillrestoration.com) has been in business since 1985, and currently employs approximately 65 concrete and masonry restoration professionals. With annual revenues of approximately $9 million, McGill Restoration is a recognized industry leader in the rehabilitation and preservation of concrete and masonry structures. Rich McGill is the CFO and co-owner of McGill Restoration.
Tell us a little about your business. – McGill Restoration is a concrete and masonry restoration contractor. We provide high quality services at a fair price as we believe that we are most successful when we are able to make long term partnerships with customers to maintain and protect their structures. ‘Building relationships through craftsmanship’ is at the center of everything we do at McGill Restoration.
How did you get started in the business? – I worked summers for the family business after high school. During my senior year at Doane College in 1991 my father asked me, ‘Are you going to come work for me or what?’ I had not considered working for him as a long-term option nor did not realize he wanted me to work for him. He was successful and needed someone to help him grow the family business. I did not know what I wanted to do so I decided it was something I had to at least try.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Separating the personal and business relationships, with my dad when he was my boss and my brother as my partner, is tough at times.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Our corporate culture of doing things the right way and respecting our employees has created a good place to work and our key workers have stayed here for long periods of time. It is more than providing jobs. We have worked together to provide good careers for a lot of good families. That really matters to me.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Looking back I see that finally accepting the guidance of Coach Rick Collura and Tom Hall during my junior basketball season at Omaha Westside allowed me to break through boundaries and showed me that being average is easy but that I could be great. My athletic success gave me much more confidence in other areas of my life. Those guys had a huge impact in my life, along with my parents who always believed in me. Most of what I have learned about being a leader was combining little pieces of the styles of different coaches I played for.
What are you the most proud of? – My children, Seth and Julia.
What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – Currently the most impact on my life is supporting groups which are attempting to find cures to cancer, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis. These have the most direct impact upon me since these are diseases which people I am close to are fighting right now.
What is your favorite movie? – Field of Dreams.
What is your favorite TV show? – I love Netflix, there are so many good shows out there that I have missed and can now binge watch.
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Dale Murphy, former Atlanta Braves center fielder, who has been my idol since I was 13 years old.
