National Donut Day may sound like a made-up excuse to enjoy a fresh donut, but its historical roots stem from one of the world’s largest service organizations. The Chicago chapter of the Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938 as a way to honor the women of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

On June 6, Russ’s Market celebrated the origins of National Donut Day by selling fresh glazed donuts four for $1 and donating $.05 for each donut sold to the Salvation Army. The traditional red kettles were also open for business, manned by bell ringers collecting donations.  Super Saver stores once again offered one free glazed donut fresh from the bakery to the first 200 customers beginning at 7 a.m. on Friday, June 6. Each Super Saver store also gave away discount coupons for donuts.
