Cornhusker Bank will be joining community banks nationwide celebrating April as Community Banking Month. As the focal point of the month, the bank will host its 4th annual One Day Without Shoes event. One Day without Shoes was originally created by TOMs Shoes as a global event to draw focus to the impact shoes can have on a child’s life. John F. Dittman, Chairman/CEO of Cornhusker Bank noted, “One of our inherent responsibilities as a business is to help advance the quality of life in the community in which we operate. By putting a local spin on this event and partnering with other area businesses for the benefit of the People’s City Mission allows us to make an impact in our own back yards. We invite the community to join us in this fun and rewarding event.”
In asking for donations of both new and used shoes for the Mission, Cornhusker Bank’s staff has made a commitment to go without shoes on April 22nd, so those in need can receive footwear. The picture on the cover illustrates this idea. Cornhusker Bank senior management team members, Carissa Bullock and Lawrence Pete, flanking Pastor Tom Barber of the People’s City Mission, are pictured, stocking-footed, with a few of the shoes already donated to this year’s collection effort, along with two youngsters who are among those that don’t have to worry about their feet going bare.
Cornhusker Bank is joined by multiple businesses throughout Lincoln who will be acting as collection sites from April 14th through April 26th. All donations of new, used and unwearable shoes are put to good use by the Mission. Shoes that can be worn are distributed to their clientele. Footwear which is unusable is bundled and sold for recycling, and the income helps sustain the Mission’s operation. All Cornhusker Bank locations will be accepting the donation of shoes, as well as monetary donations in the two week period. On April 22nd, the bank will host a free lunch and a walk from the 1101 Cornhusker Highway location to the People’s City Mission at 110 Q Street at 11:00 a.m. The walk helps raise awareness of the need for shoes in our own community, and the whole community is invited to participate.
In the previous three years of this event, Cornhusker Bank has collected over 18,000 pairs of shoes and over $26,000 in cash donations to the Mission.
