LOC’s Dr. Douglas Tewes Recognized by Concordia University in Lincoln, Nebraska

Dr. Douglas Tewes of Lincoln Orthopaedic Center was acknowledged for his service and dedication to Concordia University. He received an honorary doctorate degree at their commencement ceremony on in May where he also delivered the commencement address.

Dr. Tewes, a 1983 graduate of Concordia College, was presented with the Doctor of Law degree for his contributions to the field of orthopedic medicine, southeast Nebraska communities and Concordia University.

Dr. Tewes currently serves as an orthopedic surgeon and director of Sports Medicine program at Lincoln Orthopaedic Center. He is team physician for the Concordia Bulldogs, Doane Tigers, Wesleyan Prairie Wolves, Lincoln Saltdogs and Lincoln Stars as well as a number of area high schools. Tewes was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1995 and earned a Sports Medicine Board Certification in February 2012. He is one of the only orthopaedic surgeons in the Lincoln area who has a Sports Medicine Board Certification. In addition to his medical service, Dr. Tewes has served on the Concordia Foundation Board of Directors for 17 years.

Bright Lights Honors Long-Time Teachers in Lincoln, Nebraska

Bright Lights, a summer learning program that provides interactive classes for students grades K-9, recently honored long-term teachers who have reached 10, 15 and 20 year landmarks of service. Bright Lights teachers teach in their areas of expertise and develop a curriculum to make classes a fun-filled, hands-on experience for the students who take them.

NeighborWorks Lincoln Promotes Shawn Ryba to Chief Operating Officer

NeighborWorks Lincoln is excited to announce they have promoted Shawn Ryba to chief operating officer. The new role gives Ryba strategic and managerial responsibility for ensuring infrastructure is in place for NeighborWorks Lincoln to fulfill its mission. NeighborWorks Lincoln’s affiliate, NeighborWorks America, has recognized Ryba with leadership roles on national steering committees related to his specialty, community building. Ryba began his career with NeighborWorks Lincoln six years ago as a Community Builder then received a promotion to Director of Community Building two years ago. Ryba earned master’s degrees in social work and public administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

A few of Ryba’s key contributions over the years include launching the Lincoln Policy Network, as well as actively organizing Problem Property Potlucks that drew attention from city officials and the media to dilapidated and unsafe properties in Lincoln’s core neighborhoods. Ryba also created and co-hosts the “Our Street” radio program on KZUM 89.3 FM.
