Lincoln made sure women and children at Friendship Home were taken care of this year! Over 250 Friendship Home volunteers passed out needs list at each of the Lincoln Wal-Marts and at Sam’s Club for the 14th annual StarTran Stuff the Bus event in April. As a result, Lincoln provided $35,000 in items and cash! All items and cash will be used to ensure women and children escaping domestic violence have a safe and healthy environment in which to live. Deejays from Three Eagles stations (1240AM KFOR, 106.3 KFRX, KX 96.9, 92.9 The Eagle, ESPN 1480, and 104.1 The Blaze) helped all weekend long by selling raffle tickets, loading items, and sweeping through Sam’s Club Friday morning during the ‘Safety Scavenge’ to kick off Stuff the Bus.

If you would like to contribute to the Stuff the Bus efforts, call Friendship Home’s development office at (402) 434-0167. Please call the anonymous shelter line at (402) 437-9302 if you are in need of help. A trained advocate is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

You can also visit the Friendship Home website at www.friendshiphome.org for more information.

Join City Impact for the Grand Opening of City Impact Homes LLC on Wednesday, May 29 (11:30 AM – 12:30 PM). The affordable housing project consists of six duplex style townhomes and two single family homes – all new construction – located on three acres of land on Overland Trail (just north of Peter Pan Park). The Grand Opening will occur at the site.

The project utilizes CROWN tax credits, whereby residents rent the homes for an initial 15-year period. During this time, residents receive education in the areas of credit, finance and home maintenance to position them to be able to purchase the home at the end of the 15th year. Additionally, a small stipend from their monthly rent will be put into an account that will be available to them to help purchase the home.

Excel Development Group is the developer and Excel Construction Company is the builder for the project. Midwest Housing Equity Group is the Investor Member and City Impact serves as a Managing Member. The first families have moved in and the remainder of the homes will be occupied by the end of summer.

Volunteers of Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity began their 15th Thrivent Builds partnership on April 27th. Volunteers and funding from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, local Lutheran congregations and Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity will make the Kessler family’s new home at 6935 Lexington possible. This family was chosen because the concerns in their home and the increasing violence in their neighborhood present safety risks for their four young children. They also meet the minimum 30-50% income guideline for a family of six in order to qualify for the Habitat homeownership program.

The grant provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provides 50% of the construction costs ($52,000), in addition to the local Thrivent Financial chapter and Lutheran community who are encouraged to fundraise 10% of the cost of construction ($10,400). Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity will provide 40% of the construction costs ($41,600). The overall cost of the house is also reduced through the donation of labor and some materials. When completed, the family will be required to pay the remaining cost with a zero interest mortgage. As payments are made, the funds are recycled to build additional houses.
