The residents of the Waterford at Williamsburg capped off their four week workshop on ice skating with an ice show on April 14th. The workshop was presented by Fern Coon of the Lincoln Ice Skating Association. The first session offered a chance for residents to reminisce about ice skating experiences when they were young, and the following three workshops covered equipment, costumes, and a variety of technical skills. They also had the opportunity to make “glitzy gloves”, which the residents wore when they attended the show and waved to the skaters who performed.

The Waterford at Williamsburg is a premier Assisted Living Facility located at 3940 Pine Lake Road, and is home to approximately 40 residents. A second Waterford location is at Union College, 4848 South 48th Street. Additionally, The Waterford at Wilderness Hills located at 8939 Keystone Drive is a new memory care facility that has recently opened. The Waterford Communities is proud to say that their “Caring Ways Inspire Better Days” for residents.

This past March, Lincoln played host to one of the 2013 Tiger Rock National Championships. The National Championships are held in several locations around the United States and are part of the path for competitors on the way to the World Championships coming up in New Orleans, LA.

Held at the University of Nebraska’s Cook Pavilion, the competition had well over 2,000 competitors and families in attendance. Competitors came from Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. Competition areas included sparring, traditional forms, team sparring, free design forms, Xtreme forms, board breaking, and agility course competition.

The competition at Tiger Rock events is intense and at the same time manages to remain very positive, as students meet both victory and defeat with humility and honor. One of the tenets of Tiger Rock Martial Arts is “community”. As part of this, owner Jeff Dousharm presented a donation on behalf of the event, instructors and competitors to City Impact in Lincoln for the sum of $500.

After over 18 years in Nebraska, Tiger Rock continues to serve and support the Lincoln community. You can visit their website at tracademy.com or find them on Facebook for more information on local events.

Relearning to walk and staying physically active are important goals for people recovering from a disabling injury or illness. Expensive robotic gait devices can help accelerate a person’s ability to walk and build conditioning, but at a cost of $300,000 or more, these devices are not readily available outside of a specialized rehabilitation hospital.

Led by renowned gait specialist Judith Burnfield, PhD, PT, researchers at the Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, in collaboration with co-investigator Carl Nelson, PhD, from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, developed a new therapeutic elliptical trainer for people of all abilities, even those with extremely limited mobility.

The device, called the Intelligently Controlled Assistive Rehabilitation Elliptical, or “ICARE” system, is based on analyses of more than 130 volunteer subjects with and without disabilities. It provides customized pedal propulsion so it is easy for individuals to begin and maintain exercise on the elliptical. The motorized control has a sensor that automatically adjusts the level of support depending on the person’s needs during exercise.

Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital is located at 5401 South Street and can be reached at (402) 489-7102 or www.Madonna.org.
