April 15, 2010, is a date the United Football League believes will be remembered as a landmark moment in the history of football in the state of Nebraska and significantly in the city of Omaha.
On a sunny spring afternoon, UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue announced that the fledgling football league would welcome its first expansion team to play during the second season and the people of Omaha embraced the franchise from that moment forward.
Midwest native Jeff Jagodzinski, former head coach of Boston College and offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers was unveiled as the man who would lead the soon to be named Omaha Nighthawks when their season kicks off in the fall of 2010.
The Nighthawks will open their campaign at Rosenblatt Stadium against the Hartford Colonials on Friday, September 24 and the home fans, who already number in the thousands and are as passionate as any in the nation, will see their team in action again a week later on Saturday, October 2 against the Sacramento Mountain Lions.
The five-team UFL, which plans to expand to eight teams in 2011 and beyond that in future years, also includes the reigning champion Las Vegas Locos, who defeated the Florida Tuskers 20-17 in the inaugural 2009 Championship Game.
The birth of the Nighthawks certainly captured the imagination of the Omaha public and already their fan base tops the number of social media followers the UFL boasts on Facebook and Twitter. Only three months after the expansion announcement, the Nighthawks led the league in season ticket sales. Coach Jagodzinski hopes the success off the field will translate onto the playing side at Rosenblatt Stadium come September.
“The reception here has been fantastic,” he said. “The fans are already the best in the UFL in my opinion and we intend to produce a winning team to really give them something to cheer about.”
That team will be led out of the backfield by Ahman Green, the Packers’ all-time leading rusher and local hero, who attended Central High School in Omaha before starring for the Cornhuskers. As player signing momentum builds, more recognizable former college and NFL names are poised to join Green on the Nighthawks roster.
One the sideline, in addition to a top-class coaching staff, the Nighthawks will boast a cheerleader squad, mascot and the most fan-friendly experience in all sports.
The team will eventually move to Omaha’s new TD Ameritrade Park in 2011, and in the meantime offer high-quality football, affordable family entertainment and a reason to shout Omaha’s name from the rooftops. Season tickets are available from $40 at www.UFL-Football.com and single season tickets will go on sale soon.
The Nighthawks are eager to become Omaha’s team. Players, coaches and staff will live in the city during the season, become a part of the local community and proudly call Omaha home.
