Kinnan-Scaping is a full-service landscaping and lawn care company that has quickly grown in the Omaha area since its launch in June of 2007. Owner and CEO Brandon Kinnan had been teaching Spanish in local secondary schools before moving to California for a year. After his return, Kinnan began developing his business as a way to take pride in watching the Omaha area grow. He recently added his brother Corey Kinnan as an executive and has been giving him various positions within the company related to his strengths and ambitions. Overcoming the failure rates of small businesses has been an incredible achievement for Kinnan-Scaping. Now the company does everything from patios, retaining walls, and water features to fertilization, mowing and mulch. Kinnan-Scaping also places an emphasis on designing unique yet practical landscapes that fit into peoples’ budgets, and prides itself on timely, responsive and professional service.

Our size and versatility allow us to compete on price while always incorporating quality and uniqueness. Finally, you always get a Kinnan! What do you like about doing business in the Omaha area? I like Omaha’s size and character. It is full of hard-working, common-sense Midwesterners that continue to be progressive and open-minded when it comes to the development, design, and aesthetics of the community they live in. There is a diverse population fueling the creativity and sincerity behind the plethora of the areas’ amenities.
What kind of community organizations/groups are you involved with? We are members of the Better Business Bureau of Omaha, the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. We are also in various networking and advocate groups. In my personal life, my family and I devote a lot of time to our church, Brookside, and we have partnered with the Open Door Mission on several occasions.
Do you have a business philosophy or mission statement? We are dedicated to surpassing your expectations, and we strive for customer satisfaction. We pride ourselves on communication, speed of service, and an exceptional final product. Our promise has always been two-fold: 1) Professionalism—We promise a quick response to calls, promptness in meeting, honesty to your questions, and open communication throughout your project. We will follow through with plans, and NEVER rush the job or skip important steps. 2) Client-Centered—We promise to treat you with respect as the client. We work for you and want to do more work for you in the future. We welcome your phone calls, questions or concerns. We want your experience with us to be stress-free and enjoyable.
What changes have you seen in the industry and your company in the past few years? Landscaping has gotten a lot more attention over the last several years, in part due to television, but also due to the housing boom. Landscape is a real value-added service that can have lasting effects on a home. People have realized the emotional tranquility and peace of a well-planned outdoor space along with the practical return on investment. There is more demand for a professional to layout and guide outdoor areas in sensible, appealing ways than ever before.
What do you see happening with the business in the next five years? We would like to continue to grow, but in a manageable way, so that we can continue to control costs, be communicative with our customers and provide unique and functional landscapes. We have already expanded into bulk mulch and a fertilization program, with Corey gaining his applicators license.
What is one of the biggest challenges that your company has faced? As with any company, controlling our costs is a big challenge. Many people see “Joe’s Lawn Service” (no offense to any Joe’s) rolling down the street in an old pickup with a mower and some rakes. They then assume that anyone can mow and it’s not that expensive to do it. The reality is that there are many, many costs associated with a successful landscaping company. Even Joe’s mower needs fuel, new spark plugs, sharp blades, etcetera, and those things add up when he mows 20 lawns in one day.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about your business that most people don’t know? My one-year stint in California gave me a crash-course in vineyard management and installation. If anyone wants to plot and install a vineyard, let us know!
